Do you ever fall behind your Hyundai’s service schedule? Have you ever been late for an oil change or missed a tire rotation? If so, you’re not alone. Keeping up with car services can be challenging; we all lead busy lives. That doesn’t take away the importance of scheduled maintenance. There are things your car needs to work at its best, and one of the most overlooked services of all is a coolant fluid exchange.

Every fluid in a motor vehicle is exposed to extreme stresses. If those fluids include any organic materials (which every oil does), then they will eventually undergo chemical changes from the extreme stress. As fluids undergo these changes, they typically become less effective at their designed function.
For coolant fluid, the problem is tied to antifreeze. Half of your coolant is regular water, and it doesn’t break down over time. But, to keep the water from freezing in the cold and evaporating in the heat, you need antifreeze. Being exposed to the heat will eventually degrade the antifreeze, and that causes problems for the radiator and the engine. A coolant fluid exchange (or flush) is a simple service. The entire radiator system is drained. Typically, a detergent will be cycled through to thoroughly clean the system. Then, fresh, new fluid will be added. This prevents all of the problems you would otherwise face with bad radiator fluid.
Radiator flushes are not a frequent service. Every car has its own recommended schedule, but the average time between flushes is five years. That’s a lot of time for degraded coolant to cause problems. As the coolant degrades, it will contribute to rust in the metal components of the vehicle. Rust and dust will coagulate with the degraded antifreeze. As all of this builds over time, you will eventually get clogs in the system. That can lead to pressure buildups that put holes in the system. Then, you have a much more difficult and expensive problem than a simple flush. Skipping radiator flushes puts your vehicle at risk for major problems. Getting it done reduces the chance that you’ll end up on the side of the road with an overheating engine.
